FRPN Funding Awarded

We are excited to announce that the FRPN has selected our second group of funded projects. All five projects are led by researcher/practitioner teams and involve the collection of data from program participants and/or staff at pre- and post-program time points to assess changes in father-child relationships and/or coparenting. The teams and their funded projects include:

  1. Dr. Sarah Whitton, Dr. Kimberly Sperber and Mr. Harold Howard (Talbert House, Cincinnati, Ohio). A randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an enhanced coparenting program compared with a standard coparenting program targeting mothers and fathers enrolled in a fatherhood program.
  2. Dr. Cleopatra Howard Caldwell and Mr. Torrey Barrett (K.L.E.O. Family Life Center, Chicago, Illinois). A supplement supporting the long-term effects of the Fathers and Sons RCT, while testing new FRPN measures for nonresident fathers.
  3. Dr. Francesca Adler-Baeder and Jessica Jackson (Alabama Dept. of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, ADCANP). An exploratory process study of the influence of setting (urban/rural), perceived discrimination and program element sequencing on the outcomes for fathers in state-funded fatherhood programs.
  4. Dr. R. Anna Hayward and Ms. Romarie McCue (Retreat, Inc., Suffolk County Fatherhood Initiative, Suffolk County, New York). An RCT to examine the impact of cell phone technology on engagement and retention of fathers in a fatherhood program.
  5. Dr. Amy Holtzworth-Munroe, Amy G. Applegate, JD, Judge Kimberly S. Dowling and Judge Marianne Vorhees (Family Court, Delaware County, Indiana). An RCT of two online parent education programs that teach skills designed to improve child outcomes after parental separation. This study targets paternity cases (the term for family law cases for children with unmarried parents in Indiana courts), in which the father has acknowledged paternity, and divorce cases.

More information about these projects will be posted on the FRPN website in the coming months.

In December 2014, the FRPN announced our first group of grantees which include four projects that received a total of $350,000 to evaluate fatherhood programs. Learn more about FRPN funding opportunities here.

New FRPN Research Brief

The FRPN project team regularly publishes research briefs to assist fatherhood practitioners and researchers in measuring and evaluating paternal engagement, coparenting and economic security.

Many responsible fatherhood programs provide employment and job training to noncustodial parents. Evaluations of effectiveness in achieving employment, income and financial stability for participants are needed. Our latest brief, Measuring Employment, Income, and Financial Stability among Fathers in Fatherhood Programs, explores some of the ways in which these items have been measured in past research and some of the issues to consider when selecting measures.
