New Law, New Rules: How the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Affects Fathers’ Access to Public Benefits

Aug 2025 | Jacqueline Whearty, Ph.D. and Rachel Wildfeuer, Ph.D.

This new FRPN brief outlines how the newly passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) affects fathers across four major policy areas: the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), employer incentives for family-friendly benefits dealing with paid family leave and child care credits, MAGA newborn accounts, and increased work and reporting requirements for SNAP and Medicaid. While these measures include some positive developments for employed, unmarried fathers with sole custody and married fathers who automatically have custodial status, they offer little direct support to noncustodial, low-income, and/or informally involved fathers and may put them at risk of harm.
